Brushing and Flossing for Healthy Smiles
Proper brushing and flossing are key to preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Learn how to help your child maintain good oral hygiene and keep their smile bright and healthy!
Brushing
To keep your child’s smile clean and healthy, regular brushing and flossing are essential. Food particles can build up on teeth, eventually turning into plaque. The bacteria from plaque buildup can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and even tooth loss. To prevent these issues, ensure your child brushes for 2-3 minutes at least twice a day. Parents should assist with brushing until around age 8. Replace the toothbrush as soon as the bristles start to fray or wear down. Be sure your child avoids swallowing toothpaste and rinses thoroughly with water after brushing.
Flossing
For areas between the teeth and below the gumline where a toothbrush can’t reach, flossing is key to removing trapped food and plaque. It’s important to floss between your child’s teeth every day, especially at night, to ensure their teeth are fully clean before bed. Some light bleeding may occur when you first start flossing, but if it continues, be sure to mention it at your child’s next dental check-up. Flossing daily helps prevent cavities and keeps gums healthy.
