Federal health officials have been warning parents for decades of the harmful effects of teething remedies that contain benzocaine. Benzocaine is a topical anesthetic that temporarily numbs the gums and gives children temporary relief of teething pain. Baby Orajel is the most common teething product containing benzocaine.
The doctors at Children’s Dental Center do NOT recommend using products that contain benzocaine for remedies, instead they recommend the following alternatives:
- teething rings
- anything cold
- gently massaging the gums
- natural remedies
- children’s ibuprofen or children’s Tylenol
